JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Public Works (DPW) Center Camp Lead Rigger takes lead on the installation, maintenance, strike, storage, and safety of all rigging in Center Camp. They will perform daily checks on the rigging throughout the season to assure security and safety. They will be responsible for leading the DPW Center Camp Construction Crew through rigging best practices and safety throughout the build season. This role will track inventory, maintain all rigging hardware and equipment, and see to the decommissioning of substandard and defective hardware. Additionally, they will participate in the general DPW Center Camp Construction duties and goals.
This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is:
- From August - September : Full-Time , Non-Exempt , based in Black Rock City, Nevada .

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Rigging (70%)
- Oversee the preparation, installation, maintenance, deinstallation, and storage of all DPW Center Camp Construction Rigging
- Perform safety and maintenance inspections daily and after weather events on all DPW Center Camp rigging throughout the build and event season
- Be available throughout the build season and event week to address issues or emergencies that may arise with the DPW Center Camp rigging.
- Immediately report any safety concerns regarding rigging to the DPW Center Camp Construction Manager and see that they are resolved in a timely manner
- Assure that all rigging equipment and hardware meets specifications required for the structure.
- See to the destruction of any and all rigging hardware or equipment that is found to be damaged, defective, or worn beyond manufacturer specification
- Train and instruct DPW Center Camp Construction Crew on safety and best practices through the installation, maintenance, and storage of the rigging
- Oversee the deinstallation, winterization, labeling, documentation, and storage of all rigging hardware, equipment and supplies in order to ensure that they will be in good condition and organized for the following season; Update the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for this role as necessary changes are made
General Construction and Team support (20%)
- Participate in general construction, maintenance, strike, and cleanup of the DPW Center Camp Construction site
- Maintain clear and respectful communication with all Departments, Management, Crew and Participants during interactions.
- Participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe worksite using only OSHA approved safety equipment
Documentation/Purchasing (5%)
- Advise the DPW Center Camp Construction Manager, and the DPW Project Manager, on the ordering of rigging equipment and supplies; be proactive about necessary purchases in advance of needing them.
- Maintain an usage log and inventory for all rigging hardware and equipment, noting condition and retirement schedule
Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)
- Work with the Team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.
- Adjust workflow to support changing safety protocols as directed.
- Participate in (Manager) Meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence.
- Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
- Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
- Perform other duties as required.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
- Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
- Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
- Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
- Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Significant work experience with overhead rigging, working directly with a certified rigger (3 to 5 years)
- Working knowledge of rigging best practices and OSHA safety standards
- Direct knowledge of rigging hardware and equipment specifications
- Heavy equipment handling experience
- Ability to work at heights, and overhead for extended periods of time
- Good natured, attentive, possesses integrity and ability to manage own time effectively
- Ability to prioritize and complete tasks based on the needs of the crew/structure and according to the timeline expectations as provided by management.
- Ability to temporarily relocate to work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada
- Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
- Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada
Preferred
- Overhead Rigging Certification
- Experience using heavy equipment/scissor lifts
- Experience with festival or entertainment production work sites
- Familiarity with Google Suite software: Docs, Sheets, and Gmail
- It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid driver’s license and a good driving record
- OSHA 10 Certification, or completion of OSHA 10 training with DPW
COMPENSATION
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:
- From August - September is $17.00 to $18.00 per hour .
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Off-playa: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
- On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
