Job Description
**Shipyard Rigger - San Diego, CA**
The rigger will be responsible for lifting, moving, and positioning materials onto ships or around the yard. They will also convey instructions to crane operators and forklift drivers using hand signals, loudspeakers, or telephones.
**Responsibilities**
+ Locate, load/unload materials and equipment on and off ships and in and out of the yard.
+ Test and install rigging equipment such as cargo booms, elevators, boat davits, booms, and portable davits.
+ Control the movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces.
+ Select cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks, braces, and cushions according to the weight, distribution, and size of the load to be moved.
+ Convey instructions to crane operators and forklift drivers about where to move, lower, or lift equipment.
+ Set up tools and equipment at job sites and put equipment away when finished.
+ Handle winches, grip hoists, pulleys, cables, ropes, mooring lines, and other equipment.
+ Tilt, dip, and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under, or around obstacles using multi-point suspension techniques.
+ Test rigging to ensure safety and reliability.
+ Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure the safety of workers and materials.
+ Assemble rigging to lift and move equipment or material, select cables, spreader bars, plate clamps, and shackles according to the weight and size of the load to be moved.
+ Attach shackle and cable assemblies to structural components or modules and to the crane hook.
+ Give directions to the Mobile Equipment Operator to ensure the safety of workers and material handled, using hand signals or radio.
**Essential Skills**
+ 4+ years of rigging experience, ideally in a shipyard environment with experience specializing in loft rigging.
+ Knowledgeable of crane rigging, inside rigging, loft rigging, or bull rigging.
+ Proficient and experienced in performing crane signal/hook tendering.
+ Experienced with chain falls, come-alongs, slings, straps, spreader bars, cables, ropes, and hoisting.
+ Understand the type of signals used at the worksite and be competent in using these signals.
+ Understand the operations and limitations of the equipment, including the crane dynamics involved in swinging, raising, lowering, stopping loads, and boom deflection from hoisting loads.
**Pay and Benefits**
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $32.00/hr.
